At Blockfest, we are aware of our environmental impact and continuously work toward sustainable development. Our principle is continuous improvement: taking both small and large steps toward a more sustainable festival, and engaging both our partners and customers to take part in these actions together. Environmental responsibility at Blockfest is a shared project. Every action—whether careful recycling or innovative food offerings—brings us closer to our goal. Let’s create an unforgettable and more environmentally friendly festival experience together!

Live Nation’s Green Nation Charter guides Blockfest’s ambitious journey toward a more responsible festival experience. The year 2025 took Blockfest’s sustainability efforts to a new level—we significantly raised the bar in recycling, renewable energy use, and customer experience. The festival area featured inspiring innovations and collaborative projects that made the festival experience truly memorable. Blockfest aims to continue on this path and to keep developing customer experience, creativity, and responsibility continuously in 2026 and beyond.

Our journey in sustainability has evolved annually. In 2023, we focused on building measurement systems so that we have data to track and can target our actions where they have the greatest impact. The basis for our measurements and calculations is data accumulated from previous years. In 2024, the priority of our sustainability work was reducing our carbon footprint through renewable energy solutions and enhanced recycling. During 2025, all areas were further developed, and sustainability was fully integrated into Blockfest’s overall operations. The year 2026 will focus on rethinking recycling and waste management. We will significantly reduce material use and transition to a model where festival elements are increasingly reused over multiple years.

Energy

Only renewable electricity and biodiesel are used at Blockfest. Electricity is supplied via the City of Tampere from Väre as 100% CO₂-free renewable energy, and generators run on Neste MY renewable fuel oil. Monitoring energy consumption allows Blockfest to operate more responsibly and to reduce and optimize energy use year by year. We also actively test new solutions and involve our partners in our sustainability work.

Transport and mobility

One of the largest environmental impacts of any event or festival comes from transport and mobility of audiences, artists, and subcontractors. Most of this movement relies on fossil fuels and generates significant emissions. It is therefore essential to measure these accurately so we can reduce them. All work machinery operating on-site uses Neste MY Diesel biofuel. As part of festival operations, we measure transport and mobility kilometer totals, fuel consumption, and modes of travel. To support this, we send surveys to our partners, subcontractors, and audience members about how they arrive at the festival and from how far away. You can help us by responding to the survey sent to you! We encourage everyone to arrive by public transport or carpooling. The festival also offers bicycle and e‑scooter parking.

Waste

Tens of thousands of attendees generate a large amount of waste over the course of the weekend. In cooperation with Lassila & Tikanoja, we monitor the amount and types of waste produced at the festival. Our ongoing goal is to reduce the total waste generated during the event and to improve recycling and reuse across all waste streams. Clear annual targets have been set to reduce waste. This year as before, we develop waste management and recycling already during the planning phase, making it easier for guests to recycle during festival days. The area offers extensive recycling and bottle deposit return points. We also engage our food partners to pay special attention to reducing food waste.

Plastics

Reducing plastic use is one of the festival’s key goals. We continuously seek solutions to replace plastic throughout the entire festival. In 2025, we significantly reduced the number of single-use plastic cups and other plastic waste. This work continues year by year, with the goal of minimizing all single-use products—especially plastics. As part of our choices, the most popular drinks are served in bottles and cans included in the Palpa deposit system, with approximately 93% returned to circulation. At our food outlets, we use only wooden or cardboard biodegradable cutlery and tableware.

Water

In 2026, we will monitor water consumption across the entire event. Monitoring includes water used at sales points as well as public water stations. The number of public water stations has been increased, and free drinking water is available throughout the festival area.

Communication

We communicate our environmental actions openly and transparently to our audience and partners, and we encourage our community to act according to the principles of sustainable development. We welcome feedback, suggestions, and comments—tell us how we could do better! Blockfest is made together with you.

Partnerships

We commit our partners and subcontractors to our sustainability principles and jointly create operating models that support our goals. Each year, we collect information from our partners through surveys about their own environmental programs and actions, so we can identify effective ways to work together toward sustainability. In the future, a comprehensive environmental program will be a foundation and prerequisite for partnerships, defining the partner’s responsibilities at Blockfest and in all other operations. We require partners to participate in our environmental work so that all elements are designed responsibly with long-term use in mind.

We use the EcoCompass (Ekokompassi) certification monitoring and reporting system to track collected data, measure our progress toward goals, and report annually on our development.

We update information about our sustainability actions on this page regularly and welcome your feedback. Blockfest met the EcoCompass certification criteria in 2024, and our valuable work for the environment and audience well-being will continue every year with increased ambition.
